Ben-VoiceLessonOverview-09/07
My first voice lesson for the semester was very instructive. The
lesson took place on September 1st, owing to the 4th
being a holiday. We discussed my goals as an aspiring vocalist: I am
primarily interested in being classically trained, and I seek to gain
the skill needed for (classical) artistic expression as a vocalist.
We talked about expectations—I will make sure to bring a recording
device for my next lesson—and I gave some ideas for repertoire. We
engaged in some diagnostic vocal exercises, and discovered some weak
points, which was great! I left my voice lesson feeling like I could
start trying to make improvement to my technique. Specifically, it
was pointed out that I had a tendency to push excess amounts of air
when singing higher: actually, I believe I can recall a moment just a
few months ago when I began singing in this manner, unsure of whether
it was better technique (easier on the voice?) or not—now it’s
good to be able to recognize that is not desirable and I can try to
“load a previous version” of my singing.
