Camryn-Coyle Ch. 3-4

In Chapter 3, it kind of overflows onto the next pages about deep practice, and gives examples such as the Brontë sisters and the Z-boys. I love that the author emphasized that they became great writers NOT because they started at a young age, but because they were WILLING to spend an extensive amount of time and energy writing. This made me realize how important it is to practice as a vocal major. You can start singing at 3 years old, but if you’re not wanting to put in the effort and take the time to build your skill, it will deteriorate, and you will not succeed. After reading this part and reflecting on my own practice methods, I know that to achieve my personal goals I will need to change my routine around.

My favorite parts from chapter 4 are the descriptions of the 3 rules of deep practice. While reading the first part in Chunk It Up, I couldn't help but laugh and groan a tiny bit. I want to master a skill instantly, or try once or twice and get it on the dot. The whole process of slowing down and “taking it one step at a time” is taxing and very difficult for me. I know it is beneficial to my success, but it can be frustrating to go through and chunk problems. Overall, these 2 chapters have taught me to go into my practice time with patience and an open mind in order to grow my skills and knowledge about my voice.
