Camryn- Coyle Ch. 5-7
What really stuck out to me within these chapters was in Chapter 5, as it discussed ignition, and how it supplies the energy for deep practice. After reading this chapter, I've realized how small my ignition is, and how hard it is sometimes to be "fueled" to practice, or even work on any music. What's the most frustrating is that I do not like rules! Have a reading assignment? Not interested! "You have to practice for voice for an hour today!" I have other tasks to take care of. Whenever I'm assigned or given something to do, I am almost immediately unmotivated! All of my fuel has been dumped into the grass. On the other hand, I get motivated all other times. The other day, I was sitting in Music Theory IV, and we were discussing different methods we can use to write our songs due in October. We were listening to a random song, when suddenly I had a BRIGHT lightbulb switch on in my head, and out of no where I was scrambling to write my ideas down for my instrumentation. Additionally, I could sit at the piano messing around on the keys, when I hear a "crispy" chord, and as fast as you can blink, I had a really nice chord progression going on with an idea of what theme I wanted this song to be about.
What I want to focus on after reading these chapters is how I can create an environment for myself so that I can be ignited, even with assigned work. I know in my voice lessons last semester, I nailed a tactic that I'd been working on for a long time, and it felt as if I was on top of the world. After that, I was shocked that I could physically hear the difference I'd made by changing just one thing. I was motivated, and my ignition was running at the light of speed. As said in the very beginning of Chapter 5, "Ignition supplies the energy, while deep practice translates that energy over time into forward progress,". Moving forward, I hope to discover my own equation for ignition, and see the progress I make after this semester, and a year later.
