Dombroski-Coyle-Ch. 5-7

In chapter 5, Coyle describes how people can find passion. It was interesting to me that inspiration came from other people. Most often a child saw someone who was really good, or “talented” at a skill, and that inspired them to become like them. When he described someone seeing themselves in the future, that is something that I’ve seen myself. Reading this chapter made me think about how I found my passion/inspiration, and a lot of what he said also aligned with what I’ve seen. When I had thoughts of the future, at the time I didn’t realize what was happening inside of my head, but it makes a lot of sense as to the career I’ve chosen to pursue and the hobbies I have invested time in.

Later in chapter 6 it was interesting how Coyle talked about keeping the inspiration flowing. Becoming good at something takes time, and often is hard work. I liked how he talked about effort-based language and how to encourage people. In a voice lesson, I think it’s important for us as teachers to find something to praise in our students. But I think the way I go about it will be different. Instead of saying “You sang well today,” maybe I would try to be more specific and effort-based such as “I can see you’ve been working hard on breathing lower, and that has worked well in this moment.”

Chapter 7 was eye-opening to me. I have probably heard about KIPP schools, but never read too much into it. It was interesting how the students learned quickly about what was expected from them, and how invested they are to go to college. I also found myself mostly thinking about how different those schools are from public schools. When they stop the school to fix behavior, the students are taught how to practice deeper (whether they realized it or not). For the purposes of deep learning and making connections, I thought this was an excellent example.
