Dombroski-Coyle-Ch1-2

It’s interesting to me how Coyle describes talent. I liked how he talked about a deeper practice, and the approach in many of the examples brought his point across well. One of my favorite examples was the two groups that had to take a history test. The group that took three practice tests and didn’t really study performed better than the group that studied a lot. This makes me think about the worth of struggling, and how the brain works when it is forced to struggle.

Learning about myelin and how it can grow within the brain was also fascinating to me. The question “Why are passion and persistence key ingredients of talent” really made me think. Musicians are usually passionate, but I’ve never thought of passion and persistence as talent. But it makes so much sense! This is what creates more myelin, which helps one improve quicker. When people tell me that I am talented, I just think no I have just practiced a lot. I think there is a base talent that everyone has, but they have to work if they want to become better. I’m excited to read more about how Coyle goes more into depth in the next few chapters.
