Hatfield - Coyle 8-9
Master coaches just need to see growth. Teaching is more than just being great, you have to connect with your students. Teaching is a skill that you can grow.
Four virtues:
-Matrix of knowledge
-Perceptiveness
-GPS reflex - zap/shock students into doing things
-Theatrical honesty
I loved the cello story. I think that it is important to recognize that everyone has potential. This is a big part of my teaching philosophy - making music accessible is something I am passionate about. The text also mentioned John wooden, whose book I was gifted (I am a third of the way through) and he has really good advice and he was very successful.
I am glad that teaching is something you can grow in, because I have seen it in my own life but also have such a long way to go. I wanted to be a teacher before I wanted to do music. I think that teaching is so very important, and teachers have had some of the biggest impacts of any humans on my life.
The theatrical honesty section was interesting. It is about what works with what kid, but I also think there should be more understanding then the book let on in some cases (and for all students - because there is so much we will never know).
Independence in students is so important - we should aim to teach so our students don't need us anymore.
