Karin- Coyle- Ch 3-4
In chapter 3 we look at specific, then broad instances of myelin being applied in learning skills. I think it is important to look at examples of myelin being used both in earlier time periods, but also more modern contexts. I noticed in each example used in this chapter, the subjects sought out opportunities to challenge themselves, they sought out these deep practice environments. In my own studies, I will try to be more aware of opportunities I have available to me to deep practice and build my myelin circuits.
In chapter 4, we learn the steps to help deep practice be as effective as possible. I can tell that the author is not familiar with musical terms, as the section about Meadowmount was a bit hard to follow because no musical terminology was used. However, I think I get the overall point. I agree that time should be taken to slow down and chunk things out, however, I don't think excessive practice is good for anyone. I didn't love the use of the story of Ray LaMontagne as a good example of deep practice. Singing incorrectly that long to the point where it hurts your voice is not healthy. However, I do agree that imitation is a good learning tool and should be utilized. In conclusion, I think I will try these deep practice techniques in my practice sessions and see if they work as well as the textbook insists that they do.
