Maribelle--Coyle--Ch. 5-7

Chapter 5 started by talking about what ignites passion into beginners that propels them toward success. When it was discussing the children they studied and how they discovered how or why some succeeded and some did not, it made me think about my own journey to and through music. It made me a little emotional thinking about the different factors that could've influenced my experience through music, especially because my grandmother recently passed, and she was definitely the driving force of music on my dads side of the family. I thought it was interesting how the measurable impact came from the child's own determination before they even began. Chapter 6 "The proof of paradise is right here: all you have to do is open your eyes." This chapter spoke more to the need for struggle and recognition of that struggle to help ignite, as seen in Dr. Dweck's study with the puzzle. To ignite passion, you don't need to just 'have' special gifts. You need the struggle, the success, and then more struggle. Chapter 7 talks about the KIPP schools. It sounds pretty intense, but then I am reminded of the tennis academies we learned about in the Deep Practice section and I can see how the KIPP school fits pretty well with the model of deep practice. Although this chapter is more about ignition, I think it is easily understood and clearly a part of the purpose. These chapters all seem to include an example of how people (many being children) need to believe that they are capable of achieving great things. However, those things are not achieved through natural skill. They must work, and they must work hard, but it will all be worth it, and ignite their passion.
